On April 20, 2012 — the eve of the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, held for the second consecutive year on the University Park Campus — USC president C. L. Max Nikias hosted a President’s Distinguished Lecture and Visions and Voices signature event featuring Anthony Everitt, bestselling author of Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome’s Greatest Politician (one of four books included on President Nikias’ summer 2011 reading list). Everitt talked about his forthcoming book, The Rise of Rome, and discussed Rome’s influence on our world, from art to government, illustrating how every Western power since — including the United States — has sought to be “the new Rome.”
