Robert Gates, former U.S. secretary of defense and U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree, offered his unique perspective on foreign and domestic policy to a gathering of some 500 USC trustees, faculty, staff and students at the USC President’s Distinguished Lecture at Town and Gown on Oct. 17. The only person to have served as secretary of defense under presidents from both parties, Gates previously had a 27-year tenure with the CIA and is now chancellor of his alma mater, William & Mary.
