Verdugo Hills Hospital joins Keck Medicine of USC

In July, USC finalized its purchase of Verdugo Hills Hospital, a 158-bed hospital in Glendale, California, thereby adding the USC Verdugo Hills Hospital (USC-VHH) to Keck Medicine of USC. This new partnership significantly bolsters both organizations, and increases our ability to bring outstanding health care to residents of the Foothills, as well as throughout Southern California.

The acquisition of USC-VHH builds on a larger initiative to expand access to USC’s world-class medical care throughout our community. In recent years, we have significantly developed and beautified our Health Sciences Campus, which is home to our Keck Medical Center and its two anchor institutions: Keck Hospital of USC and the USC Norris Cancer Hospital. We also have established clinical locations throughout Southern California, and patients can now see our faculty physicians in downtown Los Angeles, La Cañada Flintridge, Pasadena, Beverly Hills, and an increasing number of locations….Continue Reading Verdugo Hills Hospital joins Keck Medicine of USC

Argus II, now FDA approved, brings sight to the blind

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved a prosthetic eye implant developed by Professor Mark Humayun, which represents the first treatment to restore limited vision to blind patients. This device, known as the Argus II, uses electrodes implanted in the eye to transmit images to the brain, bypassing retinas damaged by retinitis pigmentosa. This technology might eventually treat conditions other than blindness, such as spinal paralysis….Continue Reading Argus II, now FDA approved, brings sight to the blind

Solomon Golomb receives National Medal of Science

University Professor and Distinguished Professor Solomon Golomb has received our nation’s highest honor for scientific innovation: the National Medal of Science. In a special ceremony at the White House, President Obama praised Professor Golomb’s pioneering work on shift register sequences. The mathematical structures of these sequences—with their seemingly random strings of zeros and ones—make them tremendously useful, with applications that range from radar to cell phone systems to space communications. For this reason, Professor Golomb’s groundbreaking work touches everything from Tetris to the Mars Rovers….Continue Reading Solomon Golomb receives National Medal of Science
