USC President C. L. Max Nikias holds the Robert C. Packard President’s Chair and the Malcolm R. Currie Chair in Technology and the Humanities, and chairs the USC Health System Board.
He has been at USC since 1991—as a professor, director of national research centers, dean, provost, and now president. He holds faculty appointments in both electrical engineering and the classics. Additionally, he teaches a special undergraduate course on the culture of the Athenian democracy.
Dr. Nikias is a member of several national academies, including the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Academy of Athens, and the National Academy of Inventors. Carnegie Corporation of New York has awarded him a prestigious Academic Leadership Award.
Dr. Nikias speaks frequently about a range of nationally significant topics, including the value of—and access to—higher education; the current state and future of online education; the continued importance of the arts and humanities; and the role of elite research universities, particularly as economic drivers.
Under his leadership, USC has emerged as a global research university with an undisputed academically-elite status, and is successfully advancing a fundraising campaign that, when announced, was the most ambitious in the history of higher education.
